The History of the MOT & into the future…

MOT Shaftesbury

The MOT (standing for Ministry of Transport) Test is a mandatory visual inspection of a vehicle to ensure that the minimum requirement of road worthiness is met. Once a paper-based system, the MOT is now administered online. You can even print your certificate at home with your V5 registration document reference number.

Did you know?

The three triangles that make up the MOT logo represent the original three items tested: Brakes, Steering & Lights. The MOT test now includes hundreds of different checks which are monitored and updated, as vehicles and their technologies develop, by the executive agency that oversees the service, the Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

As vehicles and the industry advance, it’s important that the MOT testing service develops alongside it. The DVSA are constantly looking at new opportunities to improve the service:

  • ‘Connected equipment’ (Equipment that links directly to the testing service, such as brake and emissions testers, via ethernet connection)
  • The notification of vehicle safety recalls as an advisory on your certificate (introduced 2023)
  • ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras (being researched 2024)

At Five Square Motors we take great pride in all of our work including your MOT!

We aim to pass your vehicle, however, in the event of failure our team are on hand to assist in getting your vehicle back on the road and will advise you of the best course of action.

When does my vehicle need an MOT?

Your vehicle requires an MOT when it reaches its 3rd birthday, then annually thereafter. Some vehicles like taxis and ambulances are subject to more frequent testing – you can find our more information at gov.uk.

Historic & Classic Vehicles

If a vehicle was built or registered over 40 years ago, it doesn’t require an MOT test. However, you’re still responsible for ensuring the vehicle is roadworthy and many classic car owners opt to have a voluntary MOT test carried out. Find out more at gov.uk/historic-vehicles.

Does the MOT test cover everything?

Whilst the MOT test forms a comprehensive vehicle inspection and provides an overview of the overall condition of a vehicle, it does not cover everything.

For example, elements that are not tested include:

  • Removal of Parts (The MOT is a visual inspection)
  • Engine oil quality
  • Wheel Alignment
